The Problem
“On average, people spent 44% of their waking hours looking at a screen.”
(Howarth, 2023)
Therefore, more and more people are experiencing the consequences of constantly scrolling and staring at a screen every year. Myopia or nearsightedness has become one of the main problems, especially among young people and students, as they spend most of their time on their phones. According to statistics (Howarth, 2023), on a global average, people spend more time scrolling through the feeds of social media platforms than playing mobile games or even using computers. Because of the infinite scroll, people get trapped at the screen for hours.
However, the main problem is not the blue light from the screen; it is the strain on the eyes. Eyes get used to constant near work, and their “muscles stretch, and lenses shift” (Popescu, 2021). When eyes become myopic, they elongate, which causes wrong light rays bending. Besides, the more people spend time on their phones, the less active and healthy lifestyle they lead.
Main Goal
The goal and the challenge are to encourage students, who spend so much time online, to learn more about myopia and change their behaviour towards the problem. They have to become motivated to spend less time scrolling and more time caring about their eyes. However, it has to be achieved through the devices and new tech.
My Solution
Create a gaming app that will be built on the idea of a social media platform – compete with other users through posts about personal achievements, earned points and levels. The platform will be built mostly for users with eyesight problems and those who want to prevent any problems caused by constant staring at the phone. It is an opportunity to involve young people into community where people care about their eyesight and make certain steps to prevent myopia.
The app will include challenges from other users, masks and games. In one of the games people will take pictures of the places and post them on the platform, the AI system will calculate approximately 20 feet distance, detect an object and blur it. Therefore, other users will need to find the same spot and take a picture of the object that was blurred.
